UCR Associate Professor of Biology Helen Regan will speak on global change and biodiversity in southern California at the San Bernardino County Museum guest lecture on Wednesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m. The lecture is open to the public at no cost. As threats to biodiversity due to global change increase in number and magnitude there is a growing need to investigate interactions between multiple threats and manage populations and ecosystems accordingly. Outer space isn’t empty. It is full of matter—dust, planets, stars, and debris. San Bernardino County Museum Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott will lead a journey through deep time with a special presentation, “Fire and Ice,” on Sunday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. The lecture is included with paid museum admission. If you’re ever invited to a dinner party in France, don’t be on time and by all means don’t offer to bring a dish. “It is a social expectation to be 10 to 15 minutes late for any social invitation except the theater or the opera,” said Amy Saward, an American who spent more than 25 years living and working in France. “If you show up early, you’ll probably find the hostess still in the shower.” Saward is teaching “The Art of French Living- A Visitor’s Guide to French Culture” through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute sponsored by UCR Extension...

Taxidermy is a critical tool for natural history museums as well as for science. The preparation of deceased animals provides insight into the theories of systematic classification, evolution, and ecology. Museum habitat dioramas using taxidermy recreate the plant, bird, and animal life of different regions. These dioramas of animals in lifelike positions are visually interesting and engaging, allowing visitors to appreciate animals not as separate species but as part of a complex system of life. Eugene Cardiff, curator emeritus of biology at the San Bernardino County Museum, will demonstrate avian taxidermy at the Victor Valley Museum in Apple Valley on...

Karl Kottman has spent the past forty years translating a 17th century Portuguese classic into English. Now, he is taking his ideas on a test run with a six-week class based on the Latin word “verbum,” which fundamentally means “word.” “The book is an excellent example of how the Latin verb has been applied and how it has changed meanings down through the ages,” Kottman said. “It’s a very involved word and has a long history. It has changed meanings and has gotten into various works of literature and ideas in our culture.” “Latin for Lay People: What ‘Verbum’ Really...
