The plant,   Astragalus jaegerianus (family Fabaceae), is a rare species of milkvetch named for the biologist Edmund Jaeger, who first documented it in 1939. It grows only in an area of the west Mojave Desert north of Barstow and on the Army’s National Training Center at Fort Irwin and  was listed as endangered in October 1998.
