Adaptive Cycling Scheduled For Recumbent Cycle-Con

Pomona, CA–The Recumbent Cycle-Con Convention and Trade Show is hosting the first Adaptive Cycling Roundtable, affording attendees a look into what types of things are needed by riders with special needs, including either physically or mentally challenged riders.

“The Adaptive Cycling Roundtable is intended to be an informational brainstorming session,” said Shelley Patterson, director of Marketing & Business Development at Buddy Bike, a recumbent and tandem dealer in Miami Beach, FL.  “Our goal is to bring together various representatives of the alternative cycling community, as well as consumers.”

Patterson says the roundtable will be an opportunity to: 1)  Discuss the benefits of cycling for special needs riders; 2)  Look at how bike shops and programs are providing alternative cycling solutions for adaptive cyclists; 3) For cycling industry representatives to learn how they can offer better products and services to special needs families; and 4) For special-needs families to discuss their experiences in seeking adaptive cycling solutions.

Patterson added that in a 2011 survey by Autism Speaks, 83% of respondents said “… they had difficulty finding ‘appropriate’ recreational activities, such as programs for kids with special needs.”

The seminar will include a moderator and several panel members. Patterson said that they are still looking for speakers to help round out the panel.  If you are interested, you can contact her at shelley@buddybike.com
