- DO get a furnace check-up before cold weather hits. When a furnace is not working properly, homeowners are at risk to start house fires or to experience carbon monoxide poisoning.
- DO call your heating representative if you smell something burning once you turn on your furnace unit.
- DON’T leave space heaters on for long periods of time when trying to heat your home. Use a timer that will automatically shut the heater off if you are going to sleep and never leave it running when you are not home.
- DON’T turn to unconventional ways of heating, such as turning ovens and stoves on to heat the room, or bringing barbeques in to the home to generate heat.
