Art, Music and Performance in Fontana this May

Fontana, California, The Mayor and City Council invite residents to Fontana’s many art events this May. This month’s events include performances, live music and visual art in a variety of styles that are sure to delight.

First off this month is the Art Depot Gallery’s Family Art Night on May 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Family Art Night features an artist showcase for artist Tina Jennings, where she will answer questions and discuss her abstract artwork. There will also be live music from the five member Indie Rock band Verdoux, as well as artist demonstration, food and hands-on art activities. The Art Depot Gallery is located at 16822 Spring Street.

The Art Depot also offers Open Studio classes where, for a $3.00 material fee, participants learn about many artistic styles and techniques, such as pop art and watercolor. Open studio classes are Friday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This May, there are free events on select Tuesdays as part of Performance Tuesdays at the Steelworkers’ Auditorium, located at 8437 Sierra Ave.

The first performance this month is “The Salsa Divas” a live mariachi music performance from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10.

The next event for May is “Double Take” a modern dance performance from Inspired Entertainment. The performance will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17.

The third event this May is a “3-D Journey into Space” an interactive lecture and presentation about astronomy from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24.

The “Manna Jazz Combo” is the final performance for May, showcasing a Jazz Quartet outdoors in the Lewis Library Courtyard, from 5:30 to 7:30 on May 31.

The nearby Center Stage Theatre, located at 8463 Sierra Avenue, also has several events this May.

Noches con Ritmo continues at Center Stage Theatre on the first and third Thursdays of May. The night features hours of Latin music and dance instruction. Appetizers and beverages are available to order. This month will have music from Angel Lebron Y Su Sabor Latino on May 5, and The Louie Cruz Beltran Latin Jazz Ensemble on May 19. Dance instruction starts at 7 p.m., followed by live music and dancing at 8 p.m. Admission is open to adults 18 and older for a $5 entrance fee.

Also at Center Stage Theatre, for two nights only, step back in time as the Platters perform their long list of hits that have sold over 100 million records. Romance is what made The Platters universally appealing in the ‘50s and ‘60s and what still keeps them popular today. Their most popular hits include The Great Pretender, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, Magic Touch and many more. The Platters are at the Theatre on May 27 and 28, at 7:30 p.m.

Join the cast of TIBBIES as they take you back in time with “Those Fabulous Forties.” Relive the jazzy sounds of Cole Porter and the big band hits that made the Forties swing. Hear the boogie bugle boy call the troops at our own USO show in this high-energy song and dance revue. “Those Fabulous Forties” is every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night this May.
