San Bernardino – Learn to make a traditional Southern California Indian basket at a two-day workshop with Lorene Sisquoc at the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, August 7, and Sunday, August 8, from 9am to 5pm. This workshop is part of the museum’s “Arts, Naturally” initiative supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
Participants will learn about traditional Native American basket-making: plant materials, gathering techniques, weaving techniques, and contemporary basketry among southern California tribes. Designed for ages 14 and above, space is limited and pre-registration is required by Wednesday, August 4. The cost of $25 person includes the two-day workshop and all supplies. Participants need to bring their own lunch, drink, and snacks.
Lorene Sisquoc was born and raised in Riverside, California. She is a member of the Fort Sill Apache Tribe and a descendant of the Mountain Cahuilla of southernCalifornia. Lorene has been active in the traditional Native American community since 1973, coordinating many traditional weaving circles with local tribal members. She has offered her knowledge of the indigenous material culture, traditional basketry, and plant uses to many groups since 1986. She is a co-founder of the Nex’wetem, Southern California Indian Basketweavers Organization, which was formed to assure the continuance of this art.
