Poster contest now open to Inland Empire K-12 students

Montclair, CA – Chino Basin Water Conservation District is accepting poster and infographic artwork entries from kindergarten to 12th grade students in its annual contest until Jan. 20. Student winners and their teachers can receive up to $500 in prizes.

The poster contest is open to all public, private and home-schooled students in kindergarten through 12th grade within the district’s boundaries. The contest is broken into two categories: a visual art contest for kindergarten through fifth grade students, and an infographic poster contest for students in sixth to 12th grade.

This year’s theme is “Be a Groundwater Guardian.”

“We’re thrilled to work with Inland Empire students to show the community why it is important to conserve the water beneath our feet,” said CBWCD Community Programs Manager Becky Rittenburg. “Groundwater from the Chino Basin aquifer is a major source of drinking water in this region, and we hope to inspire students to learn more about where our water comes from and simple changes we can make to reduce our use.”

Kindergarten through fifth grade students are eligible to participate in the visual art contest. A winner will be chosen from each K-5 grade level, and each winner will receive $100. Teachers of winning students will receive a $250 gift card for art and educational supplies, if the class has 10 or more entries. Each teachers who submits more than 10 entries will receive a $75 gift card.

Sixth through 12th grade students are eligible to enter the infographic poster contest by creating graphics that either explain how the Chino Groundwater Basin is recharged, offer tips on water savings, or demonstrate how the student can reduce his or her own water footprint through conservation strategies.

The infographic posters will be judged on creativity, spelling and grammar, data analysis, scientific communication and the use of citations. Winning students can win up to $250. Teachers of winning students will receive a $500 gift card for art and educational supplies, if the class has 10 or more entries. Teachers who submit more than 10 entries will receive a $75 gift card.

The contest’s aim is to encourage students to join the district in educating the community about where our water comes from and why it is important to conserve this valuable resource. CBWCD’s Education Committee will select five finalists from each category by late January. On February 28, the district will host a community vote event at their Winter Open House at the Water Conservation Campus to select one winner from each category.
