Cal Poly Pomona Launches New Foundation to Lead University Fundraising

Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation

Pomona, CA – On July 1, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, launched the nonprofit Cal Poly Pomona Philanthropic Foundation to expand the university’s fundraising capabilities and capacity. Incorporated as a public entity, it will be able to accept a broader range of gifts and grants to fund scholarships, facilities, academic priorities and strategic programs at the university. The move is also a critical step in implementing the university’s Strategic Plan.

Previously, the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Inc., an auxiliary organization, had managed donations to the university. However, it was originally established to manage university enterprises, such as the Bronco Bookstore and the Kellogg West Conference Center & Hotel. Because it was legally structured to run enterprises, it could not receive matching gifts from certain corporate foundations.

“By broadening partnerships and deepening financial support, the philanthropic foundation will strengthen the university’s educational mission by increasing student scholarships, faculty research initiatives, classroom and lab renovations, and projects that benefit the economic vitality of the state and region,” said Dan Montplaisir, vice president for university advancement.

The philanthropic foundation’s volunteer board of directors includes alumni and other industry leaders who will help raise the university’s profile in the region, serve as ambassadors and help the university engage with prospective donors and corporate partners.

Larry Gates, president of DRC Engineering Inc., is the inaugural board chair of the Philanthropic Foundation. “I’m very excited about the formation of the new philanthropic foundation and very honored to serve as the first chair. This Foundation is important to me, because when I attended Cal Poly Pomona in 1987, I received an incredibly valuable education at a low cost. I want to ensure that future generations have that same opportunity.”
