Women’s Basketball: Showing Resilience Early On
Box Score – ORANGE, Calif. – In the first game of the season, No. 2-ranked California Baptist University had to face some adversity early. The Lancers battled to grab an 84-77 victory over Simon Fraser Friday night.
CBU opens the season 1-0, while the Clan drop to 0-1 to start the new year.
“We showed very good resiliency tonight,” said Coach Jarrod Olson, who picked up his 100th career win at CBU with the result. “Simon Fraser is a very good team and we were fortunate to win. Cass had a great game as usual. Kamille got us going to start the second half and Erin was awesome down the stretch. It was also great to see our bench come in and make such a big contribution.”
Women’s Volleyball: Perry, Hackett Repeat as All-Academic
Box Score -RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the second year in a row, Lauren Hackett and Jenna Perry have distinguished themselves on the court and in the classroom after they were each voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team.
California Baptist University was the only team to have more than one honoree on the All-Academic District 8 Team. Hackett and Perry became the Lancers’ first two CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 awardees last year and have now repeated that feat.
Men’s Water Polo: CBU Downs Air Force with Depth
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Two weeks before the Western Water Polo Association Championship, California Baptist University found itself locked in a back-and-forth contest with conference rival Air Force on Friday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
There were three lead changes and five ties in the game, but the depth from the 15th-ranked Lancers wore on the Falcons in the second half and CBU prevailed on a score of 12-10. CBU improves to 20-9, 3-3 in the WWPA and Air Force slides to 7-15, 1-5.
“This is perfect, this is exactly what we need,” Coach Kevin Rosa said of the tightly-contest game. “You don’t get a lot from blowing somebody out. A game like this, where it’s tight throughout and you’re playing well late, is exactly what you want and should benefit us in a couple of weeks.”
The Lancers host their Senior Day and final regular-season game against Concordia Saturday, Nov. 12th at noon. They will then compete at the WWPA Championship Tournament at Santa Clara Nov. 18-20.
Men’s Cross Country: XC Teams Ready for West Regional
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresh off its third-straight PacWest Conference Championship sweep, California Baptist University heads to Amend Park for the NCAA Division II West Regional Saturday in Billings, Mont., and is ready to get off and running.
The Lancer men, who rank fifth in the region and 16th in Division II, will need to be one of the top-five teams at the meet to advance to the NCAA Division II Championship in St. Leo, Fla., on Nov. 19. CBU comes off its sixth-straight PacWest Championship and looks to senior Valentin Robert to lead the pack.
Women’s Volleyball: Lancers Block Out the Knights
Box Score – RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A historic night of defensive prowess at the net led California Baptist University to a four-set win over Academy of Art in Thursday’s PacWest match in the Van Dyne Gym.
The fifth-ranked Lancers in the NCAA Division II West Region came close to topping its single-match record for blocks in their 23-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-17 win over the Urban Knights. CBU posted 18 blocks, which is tied for the fourth most in single-match history and just two off the record.
“All week long, we have been working on our blocking,” middle blocker Abbie Gortsema said. “Our scout really paid off for us tonight.”
Men’s Basketball: CBU Competes With Cal
BOX SCORE – BERKELEY, Calif. – California Baptist University got a sneak peek into what its made of as it took on the University of California in an exhibition game Thursday night. The Lancers hung with the Bears, but just came up short, falling 81-73.
Both teams shot pretty evenly with CBU shooting at 40-percent and Cal at 41.9.
Michael Smith led all scorers with 25 points (9-for-27), posted seven rebounds and had three assists on the night. Marquise Mosley followed with 11 points on 4-for-8 shooting, while freshman De’jon Davis also finished with 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting. Jordan Heading rounded out the Lancers in double figures with 10 points (4-for-9).
Junior transfer Jason Todd and Davis each snagged six boards for CBU. Cal barely out-rebounded the Lancers, 44-to-40.
The Lancers didn’t get the start they had hoped for, finding themselves trailing by 13 in the first four minutes of the game.
Women’s Soccer: Work of Art Finish
Box Score – RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With everything riding on its final two games of the regular season, California Baptist University came into Thursday’s matchup with Academy of Art ready to get down to business. The Lancers grabbed a 2-0 win over the Urban Knights to stay in hunt for the PacWest Championship.
CBU improves to 10-4-3 overall, 9-1-2 in the PacWest, and extends its winning streak to seven-straight games. ART U drops to 1-15-1 on the year, 1-10-1 in conference
Men’s Soccer: The Powers That Be
Box Score – RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In its final home game of the season, California Baptist University knew it had to take care of business to keep its playoff dreams alive. The Lancers did just that with a 5-1 defeat over Academy of Art Thursday afternoon.
CBU – which ranks fifth in the West Region – improves to 12-5 on the year, 8-4 in the PacWest, with the result. The Urban Knights drop to 2-14-1 overall, 2-10-0 in conference.
