Chinese Students Visit San Bernardino, Learn About American Culture, Education

More than 350 middle and high school students from throughout China participated in a cultural immersion program offered by Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Extended Learning (CEL). The students, ages 12–18, arrived throughout the summer in eight different groups from Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu and Yunnan. Most have had years of English instruction and were eager to practice their language skills. Some of the students resided with area host families to experience American family life firsthand.

“It is always a pleasure to see the younger generations, our future generations, bridging the international gap through education,” said Dr. Tatiana Karmanova, dean of the College of Extended Learning and director of International Extension Programs.

During their visits, the Chinese students experienced learning in a typical American classroom, taking courses on U.S. lifestyles and culture, including popular sports, music and entertainment. They enjoyed field trips to San Diego, Disneyland, NBC Studios and other local attractions. For the older students interested in Southern California study abroad programs, tours of the Cal State San Bernardino campus and other local colleges and universities were provided.

Liu Zihao, a student from Beijing’s Zhongguancun High School commented, “Cal State San Bernardino was so impressive in its size, location and instructors. I wish to return here to study soon.”
