Colton, September 5, 2013—CHJ Consultants, a Colton engineering firm specializing in geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, construction inspection, and materials testing services, has announced the promotion of Jim Cooke to the position of Managing Engineer. In this role, Cooke will be responsible for the oversight of company’s engineering staff and projects.
“CHJ is involved in pre-construction investigations that require knowledge of soil conditions below the ground surface,” explained Cooke. “We investigate the soils and bedrock conditions and provide recommendations for treatments based on the proposed foundation. While the structure is under construction, we inspect for materials, placement, and welding.”
CHJ also performs forensic investigation and provides recommendations on structures that have experienced distress. In the Southern California area, seismic activity presents a challenge and design levels are set higher than in other areas of the country.
“Jim has probably done every job from sweeping the floor to managing the Engineering department,” said Bob Johnson, president of CHJ Consultants. “With this background, Jim has hands on knowledge of the business here at CHJ Consultants and leads the company by example. His talent and experience benefit the company every day.”
Before joining CHJ, Cooke studied Geology, Chemistry, and Engineering at the University of Idaho, earning is bachelor’s degree and then returning to the Redlands area. While working with the company, Cooke became a Registered Civil Engineer six years ago and is now studying to become a Registered Geotechnical Engineer. “He joined CHJ as a field technician over thirty years ago and worked his way ‘through the ranks’ with his keen sense of what needed to be done and his work ethic.” said Johnson.
“The people are the reason I enjoy my job and have stayed for thirty years,” said Cooke. “If I have an issue, I can walk into Bob Johnson’s office, and he will talk with me. There has always been an open door policy.”
