City of Fontana Named #1 in National “Let’s Move!” Health and Wellness Program

Fontana, CA., July 21, 2014- The Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC) press conference event was held to celebrate the City of Fontana’s accomplishment in achieving five gold medals in all five of the program’s health goals.

The event was a grand celebration of the The National League of Cities (NLC) recognition of the City of Fontana and Mayor Acquanetta Warren for the achievement of key health and wellness goals for LMCTC .

The City of Fontana is proud to be called  #1 in the nation by LNCTC . Attendees gathered on the Pacific Electric Trail to learn and participate in a variety of the City of Fontana Community Services Department physical fitness and nutrition fun activities from aquatics, sports, arts to recreation class booths.

LMCTC is a major component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s comprehensive Let’s Move! initiative, which is dedicated to solving the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation.

LMCTC calls upon local elected officials to adopt sustainable and holistic policies that improve communities’ access to healthy affordable food and opportunities for physical activity through five goal areas.

“I am excited that Fontana has again been recognized for our efforts in the  Let’s Move! program. The City of Fontana exemplifies what this program is all about.

We understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and with the Healthy Fontana program and LMCTC; it is our goal to ensure a healthy, happy, and successful community.” stated Mayor Acquanetta Warren.
Presenters included Rear Admiral Nadine Simons, M.S., R.N., U.S. Department of Public Health & Human Services Regional Health Administrator; Ruben Brambila, San Bernardino County Department of Public Health Project Director; and Olivier Wong, FUSD Human Resources Director.

The event included booths from various programs within the Community Services Department such as the aquatic center, sports, arts, to make sure families stay healthy and happy in the community. Guests also received free smoothies and were entertained by the mobile recreation bus as well as the library bus and an inflatable slide.

The City of Fontana is committed to building a happier and healthier community. In doing so, Fontana is leading the way in providing a healthy living environment for its residents with 36 parks, 59 sports fields, 5 aquatic facilities, 3 gyms, 2 performing art centers, over 290 Healthy Fontana endorsed classes, 7 miles of the Pacific Electric Trail, 10 community centers, the Farmers’ Market, and nutrition education events.
The City of Fontana is proud to endorse and is dedicated to the program. The City will continue to be committed to LMCTC’s five goals which are designed to promote sustainable strategies to improve the health of the community.

Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties Five goals:
• Goal I: Start Early, Start Smart: Promoting best practices for nutrition, physical activity, and screen time in early care and education settings
• Goal II: My Plate, Your Place: Prominently displaying MyPlate in all municipal or county venues where food is served
• Goal III: Smart Servings for Students: Expanding access to meal programs before, during and after the school day, and/or over summer months.
• Goal IV: Model Food Service: Implementing healthy and sustainable food service guidelines that are aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
• Goal V: Active Kids at Play: Increasing opportunities for physical activity
