Claremont: It's Raining on Stage at the Candlelight Pavilion

Based on the MGM 1952 Film- Singin’ in the Rain

CLAREMONT, CA— Hollywood of the 1920s is the setting for this zany, light-hearted romantic comedy about the early days of sound film, when many a movie studio found itself scrambling to salvage the career of its chip-munk-voiced silent picture star. This light-hearted spoof of Hollywood as sound changes the movie-making rules includes some of the best-loved comedy, dance numbers, and love ballads in Musical History. The infectious score includes “Good Morning”, “Make ‘Em Laugh”, “You are My Lucky Star”, and many others. Don’t miss the famous title song sequence where we make it rain live on stage! Singin’ in the Rain opens April 1st and runs through May 8th at the Candlelight Pavilion.

Imagine a wonderful film set in 1920s Hollywood starring two amazing performers, Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds, filled with memorable songs and a quirky story that could only happen on a Hollywood set. Add in Arthur Freed and his huge catalog of songs and you have one of the best movie musicals ever created. Fast forward from 1952, when the film was created, to 1983, when the film was adapted for the stage. The plot was taken straight from the film in which silent films took a backseat to the “Talkies”. It follows Don Lockwood, his friend Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and one of the era’s biggest silent film stars, Lina Lamont. Trouble ensues when it is found that Lina’s vocals are too harsh for sound movies, and the studios have to scramble to find a way to save their films!

Now, fast forward to 2011 and you have the recreation of that same musical presented on stage at the Candlelight Pavilion directed by Candlelight Pavilion veteran, John LaLonde (Always…Patsy Cline, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Christmas Memories), musically directed by Jennifer Wilcove (Once Upon a Mattress) and choreographed by Janet Renslow (Thoroughly Modern Millie). The production team has brought together an amazing cast, and Orlando Montes, our technical director, has made it rain live on stage! This show is sure to wow any audience!

The talented cast is led by Wesley Alfvin as Don Lockwood, Colette Peters as Kathy Seldon, Casey Garritano as Cosmo Brown, Ann Myers as Lina Lamont, John Nisbet as R.F. Simpson, Ray Limon as Roscoe Dexter and Angela Calderon as Dora Bailey/Miss Dinsmore. The ensemble cast includes Anne Arreguin, Marius Beltran, Desmond Clark, Libby Snyder, Chanel Kaufman, April Lovejoy, Cymbaline Olsen, Cesar G. Quintero, Matthew Thurmond and Michael Milligan.
