CORONA, CA – Councilman Dick Haley tendered his resignation from the Corona City Council effective immediately.
Councilman Haley sustained a very serious fall approximately two weeks ago which resulted in a brain hemorrhage.
“After discussions with and the advice of two neurologists, my family physician and my family, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot serve the City of Corona and am resigning my position as City Councilman immediately,” said Dick Haley.
Councilman Haley has been a valuable and dedicated public servant for the City of Corona for over eighteen (18) years, having served most recently on the Corona City Council since 2012 following ten (10) years as Corona City Treasurer. Councilman Haley was elected At-Large and his term of office was not set to expire until 2020.
Dick Haley currently serves on the Finance, Legislation & Economic Development Committee and represents the City at the Riverside Transit Agency (RTA). Mr. Haley proudly served in the United States Marine Corps in Viet Nam as a combat helicopter crew chief. He had four years of decorated and distinguished military service. Mr. Haley is a past president of the Corona Rotary Club, a recipient of the Corona Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the year award and the Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen award. He has served as a board member on many charitable and service organizations in Corona.
Under state law, the City Council has 60 days following “commencement of the vacancy” to either fill the vacancy by appointment or to call a special election. In this situation, a person appointed or elected to fill the vacancy will hold office for the unexpired term (November of 2020). Although the City is in the process of switching to by-district elections, since Mr. Haley’s current term of office was elected at large, any appointment or special election would be conducted at-large as well.
The Corona City Council will hold a special meeting on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. to consider how to proceed with filling the City Council vacancy created by Dick Haley’s resignation.
