Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Reaching Out EMBODI Program Impacting Communities

Riverside, CA. –  Like queens on a chessboard, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., are making strategic moves to protect and support the moves of their kings. See “Day of Mentoring.”

Founded on January 13, 1913 by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, the sorority recently launched a nationwide campaign entitled,EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence), to help address the educational, social an emotional challenges facing today’s “at-risk” African American boys.

Consider these facts:

50% Black male student dropout rate
43% Black male teen unemployment
70% Black children born to single mothers
48% Black prison population
30% Black male student suspension rate
24/100,000 Black on Black male youth murder rate

One of DST’s major impact’s involves partnering with established and progressive mentoring programs such as Brother II Brother (founded by LAPD Officer Stinson Brown) of Southern California.  The two organizations are working closely on upcoming projects scheduled for March 12 – “Day of Impact” and May 7 – “Day of Mentoring.” The DST Alumnae chapters working with Brother II Brother include Pomona Valley, San Bernardino/Riverside and Long Beach/Cerritos; locate DST Alumnae Chapters in your area to involve black male students in the EMBODI program.

For the May 7 “Day of Mentoring”, workshops will include academic achievement, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, student athletes, transitional living skills, fatherhood, investing, entrepreneurship, career development, real estate planning, anger management, legal intervention, mental health, peer discussions and a host of one-on-one and group mentoring sessions.  Street Positive CEO, Terry Boykins, and Delta Sigma Theta Soror, Karima Deadrick, will co-chair the event.  The event will be held at the University of California, Riverside.  UCR African Student Programs, directed by Mr. Ken Simons, is the host sponsor.
