Design a Basket at the Museum

On Saturday, July 24 from 11am to 4pm, visitors will get a chance to use their creative skills to design a basket and have their artwork exhibited in “Design a Basket,” at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. Part of the museum’s “Arts, Naturally” initiative supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation, this program is included in paid museum admission.

Visitors can create a design using baskets in the museum’s special exhibit, “Generations of Symbols: the Morongo Band of Mission Indians Basket Collections,” for inspiration. Their drawings will then be on exhibit at the museum from July 27 through August 29.

“Nature inspired designs for our traditional basket makers,” said Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “Our visitors will experience the process of creating a design that could be incorporated into a burden basket, jar, or tray. Plus, their drawings will go on exhibit so their friends and family can come to see them.”

“Design a Basket,” is for all ages. Volunteers will be on hand to help visitors observe and create the drawings. This program will also be held on Saturday August 28 (drawings will be on exhibit August 31-October 17). For more information, call the Education Division at (909) 307-2669 ext. 256.
