Riverside: Broadway Actress Brings Fannie Lou Hamer to Life in a One-Woman Performance

Mzuri Moyo, a Broadway actress, will perform a one-woman show showcasing the life of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. Hamer was a voting rights activist, a leader in the civil rights movement, and a philanthropist in Mississippi. She rose to become the vice chair of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and representative at the 1964 Democratic National Convention.

Moyo will perform her one-woman show on Friday, April 21, at 6:30 pm in the Riverside City College Salvatore G. Rotella Digital Library Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, but parking rules will be enforced. Please see metered machines for parking passes and regulations.

“After she (Hamer) told how she was beaten, I still did not see one ounce of hate in the woman,” said Moyo, who has performed all over the world. “That blew my mind. I could not get how she could not hate the people who treated her that way.”

Moyo captures a little known, but very important moment in history through speech and song. She has performed the Fannie Lou Hamer Story in over twenty states since 2001, when the show first showcased. Moyo, who wrote the show, was born in Paterson, NJ, and has written since childhood. She trained as a singer in Italy and as an actress at HB Studio in New York.

The show received the 2002 AUDELCO Award in New York for Best Solo Performance.
