“Explorations in Art”

“Exploring the Artists” – find your inner artist! This class introduces famous artists Monet, Bearden, O’Keefe, Cassatt, and Seurat, and the unique techniques they used to create their art. Students will learn the techniques of Pointillism and Collage and create art using oil pastel, tempera, and watercolor. Art exhibited at artists’ reception: Saturday, June 18, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. Instructor: Beth Yeager June 13-17 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon (Ages 8-12) $145 (RAM Members $130.50)

“Shutterbug” – snap away while you play! Have fun learning basic digital camera and photography techniques. Projects include making pinhole cameras, creating family trees, and exploring color concepts through collage. The class will go on a photo walk downtown to the California Museum of Photography. Cameras and laptops will be provided, but students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own. A 2G flash drive is required for students using our equipment. “Abstractions” – a unique and special art experience! Young artists will explore abstract art and create masterpieces inspired by Kandinsky, Pollack, Miro, and Picasso. The last class session will be held at the Riverside home studio of prominent artist Paulden Evans! Students will have the once-in-a-lifetime experience of creating a work of art under his direction, enjoy a private tour of his property to view his artwork, and be hosted to a special lunch with Mr. Evans. “Fun with Clay” – it’s ok to get your hands dirty! Students will learn the ins and outs of working with clay to create pinch pots, beads, animals, and many other unique objects using an air-dry technique. Projects will be embellished with beads or painted to perfection to create clay treasures! Let your imaginations go wild as you work with this fun medium. “The Art of Math” – count on having a new art experience! This high-energy course examines the basic elements and principles of design used in art and the math concepts of geometry and measurement. Students will explore how art and math are interconnected and will create artwork using compass construction, paper folding, drawing, and painting. The class will explore the works of Escher and Da Vinci, among other great artists who were also mathematicians! Instructor: Beth Yeager/UCR Undergraduate Students! “We Love Riverside!” – it’s all about oranges in this juicy class! Students will visit the Historic Mission Inn Museum to learn about the history of Riverside’s oranges. Back at RAM, students will make Paper Mache oranges, design their personal orange crate packing label, and create oil pastel landscapes of the orange groves. Students will sample several different varieties of Riverside-grown oranges compliments of the California State Historic Park and will receive their very own bag of oranges and other citrus fruit. “Bringing the Beach to Riverside”– beauty and inspiration from the ocean! Sand paintings, fish rubbings, Turner’s seascapes, watercolor paintings, and more! Students will create beach- inspired pieces of art. We will end the week on Friday with a catered picnic lunch by D’Elias Grinders on beach towels with umbrellas on RAM’s front lawn! “Drama Express!” – it’s show time! Take a look behind the scenes as we go on a private tour of the newly renovated Fox Performing Arts Theater where students will participate in an art lesson. All week, students will learn the history of musical theater, dabble in theater games, and will create Broadway-musical-inspired works of art using oil pastel, watercolor, and acrylics! Instructor: Beth Yeager along with storyteller extraordinaire Karen Rae Kraut! July 18-22 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon (Ages 8-12) $145 (RAM Members $130.50)

“Dr. Seuss Comes Alive Through Art!” – it’s time for lots of fun to start! Everyone loves Dr. Seuss and in this class students will hear his stories, create art projects using clay, tempera, and other mediums, and even be visited by Thing One and Thing Two! Students will prepare a Reader’s Theater of “Daisy Head Mayzie” which will be presented to parents on RAM’s rooftop on Friday evening! A pizza dinner will be provided. “All About Dance” – this class captures all the right moves! Visual and performing art is explored in this one- of-a-kind class! Students will create unique pieces of art inspired by various forms of dance. Mediums include clay, oil pastels, pencil, and watercolor. On Wednesday, students will walk to the nearby Historic Aurea Vista Hotel, home of Riverside Ballet Arts, and enjoy the dancers in town from Morelia, Mexico! With drawing pads in hand, students will capture their movements on paper before returning to RAM to add color to their drawings. “Flower Power” – just plain blooming fun! All things floral is the theme of this week! Fresh flowers from the downtown Farmer’s Market will be the inspiration as students create floral masterpieces in various mediums including watercolor, oil pastel, colored pencil, and tempera. Each student’s favorite piece will be matted and framed. Art exhibited at artists’ reception on Saturday, August 13, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. “The Art of Science” – explore life’s scientific and artistic nature! This is a high-energy, interactive course where students will examine and practice the application of both science and engineering as these fields relate to art. Using concepts from earth, life, and physical sciences, students will create their own art-based projects using a variety of mediums and be amazed at the connections discover between science and art! “Exploring Pop Art Andy-Warhol Style!” – create your own style! Students will learn about the late 1950’s art style called Pop Art by studying such iconic Pop Artists as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Students will transform objects from popular culture and create their own Pop Art masterpieces. For the culminating activity, each participant will be designing and printing their very own Pop Art inspired t-shirt! “Art Around the World” – don’t forget your passport! Join us on an ARTventure to Japan, Africa, Australia, Ancient Egypt, and Mexico! Travelers will create amazing art, learn about the culture of each country, see authentic artifacts, sample native cuisine, and listen to cultural music! Instructor: Beth Yeager August 22-26 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon (Ages 6-12) $145 (RAM Members $130.50)

“Plein Air for Kids!” – capture a place in time! Plein Air is simply a “painting executed out-of-doors capturing a scene directly in front of the artist”. RAM has a professional group of Plein Air adult artists. This class will enable youth to share in this unique experience as students take their canvases outside to various downtown Riverside locations! They may paint the arch of the Mission Inn one day and the old City Hall building the next! Led by local Plein Air artist, Chick Curtis, this class is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! “Basic Art Concepts” – gotta start somewhere! This four-week session introduces the building blocks of art in a fun and age-appropriate format. Students will learn line and pattern, the color wheel, perspective, and finally composition as they experiment using a number of different media. This is a great class for all artists wishing to learn the fundamentals of art. Instructor: Nora Unrath Mondays: June 13, 20, 27, July 4 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m (Ages 6-9) $100 (RAM Members $90)

“Drawing from Life” – recreate what you see! Students will develop the ability to draw realistic images. Through a variety of challenging and fun lessons, students will explore contour, line, positive and negative space, perspective, proportion, and shading. Portraiture, chiaroscuro, and landscape are some of the lessons students will experience. “The Young Illustrator” – share your story! Young illustrators will experience popular stories by authors like Maurice Sendak, Lane Smith, and Eric Carle. Students will learn techniques to develop their own creative illustrations in watercolor, tempera, pastel, and colored pencil and come away with a creatively designed book of their very own! This class ties great literature with great art! Sure to be a popular class! Instructor: Kelly Rider Tuesdays: June 14, 21, 28, July 5, 12, 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. (Ages 7-11) $130 (RAM Members $117)

“The Art of Poetry” – see, feel, reveal! Put your visions into words and your words into visions. Create a mixed-media journal to capture your ideas and inspiration. Experiment with collage, drawing, and painting to inspire your poems. The Abecedarian poetry form will be used as a means to create meaningful poetry. Analyzing famous works of art will also be part of this week as students make connections between art and literature. Sure to be a wonderful class for anyone who wants to learn to express themselves. “Mommy and Me and Daddy Too! – family fun week! Remember how much fun you had painting when you were a child? This class is designed for Moms (and Dads) and their young children. We’ll start out with a story and then turn it into a fun art activity! Everyone will enjoy painting, drawing, and creating paper sculptures using a wide variety of mediums including tempera, watercolor, and colored pencil. Let your creative juices flow in this relaxed environment! Instructor: Viviana Perez Session 1: Wednesdays: June 15, 22, 29, July 6, 13 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Ages 3-7) | Session 2: Wednesdays: July 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Ages 3-7) $100 (RAM Members $90) *Add $15 for each additional child.

“Under Water Ocean Adventure” – wet, wild, and wonderful! All things wet and wonderful is the theme of this painting class! Students will create various underwater creations using watercolor techniques, including wet-on-wet, white-oil-pastel-resist, spray bottle, lifting, salt, splatter, and watercolor and pen. Instructor: Connie Lynn Pico Thursdays: June 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. (Ages 6-10) $130 (RAM Members $117)

“Animal Safari” – we love animals too! It’s time to explore the animal kingdom using a variety of artistic techniques. Students will create collages, clay sculptures, and painting keepsakes using a variety of different mediums. Sure to be a fun class for all! Instructor: Connie Lynn Pico Thursdays: July 21, 28, August 4, 11, 18 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (Ages 6-10) $130 (RAM Members $117)

A few important things to remember:

Class size is limited, so please enroll early as classes are sure to fill up! RAM member discounts are given to those who have joined at the FAMILY level or above.

Please sign your children in and out of the classroom before and after each session. Thank you!

For classes that are leaving the premises, it will be necessary to fill out a separate permission slip on the first day of class.

All refund requests must be received in writing one week prior to the first class meeting. Fifteen (15%) percent of the class fee is retained by RAM. If RAM cancels a class due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.

If a class is canceled by RAM, full refunds will be provided within 10 days of cancellation.

All student materials will be provided. Students may bring a snack for the break.
