"Fiddler on the Roof" Opens at the Candlelight Pavilion in Claremont

Fiddler on the Roof Brings Tradition to the Candlelight Pavilion

CLAREMONT, CA— In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty, leaving them crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. Familiar songs include, “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

The origins of Fiddler on the Roof began with the novel “Tevye the Dairyman” by Sholom Aleichem. It was adapted by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein. The title of the play was chosen from a painting called the “The Fiddler” by Marc Chagall. “The Fiddler is a metaphor for survival, through tradition and joyfulness, in a life of uncertainty and imbalance.” Fiddler on the Roof originally opened on September 22, 1964 at the Imperial Theatre. It ran for seven years and nine months originally–setting a record of 3,242 performances for long running Broadway shows. In 1967, Chaim Topol played his first role as Tevye. He would later go on to revive the role in the 1971 film version (which won both Academy and Golden Globes for that year in movies). There were a total of four Broadway revivals; the 1990 revival won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. The show is considered to be the last show of Broadway’s “Golden Age.” The New York Times boasted the musical as “Filled with laughter and tenderness. It catches the essence of a moment in history with sentiment and radiance. An exceptional accomplishment.”

The Candlelight Pavilion’s 2012 production of Fiddler on the Roof will mark the 3rd time that Tevye and his family have graced the Candlelight Stage. With beautiful music and a meaningful story it was essential for the Candlelight Pavilion to bring together an amazing cast and a brilliant directorial team. Direction for the cast of Fiddler on the Roof is by Chuck Ketter (Director of 2010’s Annie), with Musical Direction by Douglas Austin (current director of Citrus Singers at Citrus College in Glendora, CA) and Choreography by John Vaughan (also from Citrus College).
