First 5 at County Museum

It’s All Aboard the Reading Railroad when First 5 San Bernardino and the San Bernardino County Museum Association sponsor free admission to the Reading Railroad Literacy Fair at the San Bernardino County Museum on Sunday, November 6, 2011.

First Five San Bernardino will be at the museum from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free activities and information from programs throughout the county to show families the fun in developing daily reading habits and cultivating a love of books. Activities are geared toward children 5 and under and their families. Kindergarten and preschool children will receive a backpack filled with school supplies and a healthy snack. PBS animated superhero Word Girl, who fights crime using superhero strength and a colossal vocabulary, will make an appearance. Parents can receive information on the importance of early reading and how to incorporate books into their daily routines. The event will also focus on the importance of parents’ role to read early and read aloud to their sons and daughters.

“Current research overwhelmingly supports the importance of facilitating early and emerging literacy skills in preschool-age children as a critical foundation for literacy development,” said Karen Scott, Executive Director of First 5 San Bernardino. “Studies have shown that children who are read to are often more successful in school and are helped with brain stimulation, self-esteem, and listening skills.”

“I am pleased the San Bernardino County Museum Association has partnered with First 5 of San Bernardino and we can offer free museum admission again in 2011,” said LaWanda Avery-Brown, executive director of the Museum Association. “Together we can insure that our visitors will have the opportunity to have an enjoyable, educational, and entertaining experience.”
