Fun and Games Family Fun at the Museum

Remember croquet? Can you throw a ringer with horseshoes? On Saturday, April 14, the County Museum is offering a Family Fun Day, “Yard and Lawn Games.” All activities are included with regular paid admission, and run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We are fortunate to offer this program with a grant from the Community Foundation Serving Riverside and San Bernardino Counties,” explained Jolene Redvale, curator of education. “It’s an opportunity to come out and play together, and introduce some old, familiar games to a new generation.”

Games will include badminton, croquet, hoop-and-stick, bocce, mancala, blongo ball, horseshoes, four-square and sticky-catch. In addition, table games, solitaire, card games, and board games will be on hand.

“The County Museum is participating in First Lady Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’ Move’ program, an effort to include active play for children’s health and fitness,” said Redvale. “We think that enjoying active play with games that have been around for decades is a great way to enjoy a family day at the museum. This summer, we’ll also have a whole week of active fun at our Activate FUN! summer camp for kids aged 7 to 12.”

Games will be accessible throughout the Museum courtyard. Volunteers will be on hand to help with set up and to explain procedures of play, as needed. “I expect all the games to be pretty self-explanatory. Plus, it’s a great way opportunity to make up some rules or procedures and make it extra fun!” said Redvale.

The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $8 (adult), $6 (military or senior), $5 (student), and $4 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free.
