Gerdau Long Steel North America Joins Rancho Cucamonga’s Green Business Recognition Program

Rancho Cucamonga, Ca– Gerdau Long Steel North America has joined the City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Green Business Recognition Program, which recognizes businesses who have demonstrated a commitment towards environmental sustainability.  Gerdau’s Rancho Cucamonga mill manufactures, fabricates and installs rebar at construction sites throughout the Western states. It is the last melting steel facility in California and supplies over one-third of overall rebar demand.  Gerdau accomplished a monumental environmental achievement by replacing a 37-year-old Bag House and upgrading their melt shop evacuation system, making the mill one of the cleanest in the world with the lowest particulate and metals emissions rates in the United States.  The Bag House project was a multi-year and multi-million dollar investment representing an impressive commitment and dedication to the safe and sustainable production of “Green Steel”. They also have incorporated a variety of green practices into their operations that promote waste reduction, sustainable purchasing, pollution prevention, energy efficiency, and alternative transportation, among others.

“Gerdau did a fantastic job with these environmental achievements. It is a big win for both the company and the community.  We are proud to recognize Gerdau through the Green Business Recognition Program.” said Management Aide, Deborah Allen.

The Green Business Recognition Program showcases the sustainability efforts of Rancho Cucamonga businesses and encourages green business practices throughout the community. Businesses that demonstrate environmental practices in various categories such as waste reduction, pollution prevention, recycling, purchasing, energy efficiency, transportation, water efficiency, transportation, and stakeholder engagement and complete no-cost resource assessments are eligible to be recognized as a Healthy RC Green Business. Participating businesses receive recognition and exposure through City outlets and at a City Council meeting, and are provided with a Healthy RC “Green Business” window decal to display at their business entrance. Participating businesses are also featured in the City’s Rancho Reporter quarterly community newsletter and on the City’s Healthy RC website.  The Green Business Recognition Program is part of the City’s Healthy RC Program to promote environmentally sustainable practices in the community.

Gerdau Long Steel North America is the first industrial company to be recognized as a Rancho Cucamonga Green Business.  They are one of the largest recyclers in the world, transforming 16 million metric tons of scrap into steel every year.

The steel from Gerdau qualifies for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits from the U.S. Green Building Council in the recycled content and regional materials categories.  LEED is the most widely used green building rating system in the world and provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.  The economic contributions of Gerdau are significant as they currently employ approximately 1,100 jobs in California, 561 in San Bernardino County, 300 of which are at the Rancho Cucamonga mill. They are also the recipient of the 2018 Achievement in Environmental Stewardship Award from the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) which is commendable.
