Victorville – Roy Clark is best known for bringing the Country variety show, Hee Haw into millions of homes each week. On Father’s Day, June 19th, this self proclaimed “hillbilly singer” brings his down-home country fun to the stage at 6:00 p.m. during Huck Finn’s 35th Jubilee.
The evening concert highlights the Friday through Sunday escape that re-creates the spirit of Mark Twain at Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville. For each Jubilee event, families pack the camper with kids, banjos and fishing poles and run away for some old fashioned fun in the country.
Clark returns to the Jubilee following a four year hiatus. “There’s something uniquely American about Roy Clark and the Jubilee,” states Don Tucker who selects performers each year. “He’s a perfect fit for Huck Finn’s 35th. He belongs here.” Appearances by legendary performers like Earl Scruggs, Roger Miller, and now Roy Clark continue the Jubilee’s 35th year history of sharing great artists with their fans on Father’s Day.
Clark enjoys a string of hits which include the Grammy award winning “Alabama Jubilee”, “The tips of My Fingers” and “Yesterday When I Was Young”. He was a favorite recurring actor on the classic television sitcom, The Beverly Hillbillies which spawned several acting rolls on television and in the movies. Clark became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1987 and has been awarded both Entertainer of the Year and Comedy Act of the Year by the Academy of Country Music. His most recent honor came in 2009, when he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
During his career, he headlined some of the world’s most prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and The Grand Palace in Brussels. Today, he continues to tour extensively. For Clark – and for his legion of loyal fans – live performances are what it’s all about. “They’re there to hear you; it’s time to have fun” states Clark. “I keep a band of great young people around me, and we’re not musically restrained.”
Named 2001 Bluegrass Event of the Year by the International bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), the Huck Finn Jubilee continues to showcase top names in Country and Bluegrass music. This year’s impressive lineup includes IBMA’s Hall of Fame Member, Rodney Dillard from the Andy Griffith Show, Dove Award Nominee, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, RFD Television’s Leroy Troy and The Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, and Sierra Hull and Highway 111 among others.
A high desert tradition since 1976, The Huck Finn Jubilee not only features top name entertainment on main stage, but, it also hosts guitar, banjo, band and songwriting workshops in a more intimate setting. Musical jam sessions or pickin’ parties also run nearly all night long in special campgrounds on the park.
Mojave Narrows Regional Park in Victorville, where the Jubilee is held, sits on a 500 acre oasis resembling parkland found along the Mississippi River. To reach it, take the Bear Valley Road exit off I-15, then go east to Ridgecrest Ave., and turn north to the park.
