October Events at the Mary Vagle Nature Center

Fontana, California, September 26, 2011. The Mayor and City Council invite the public to attend the many upcoming events this October at the Mary Vagle Nature Center, located at 11501 Cypress Avenue.

First off for October is the Center’s Star Party. Join amateur astronomers from the Riverside Astronomical Society on a fascinating tour through the autumn sky on Saturday October 1, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Solar scopes will be set up from 4:30 to sunset to provide dramatic views of the sun like you have never seen before, followed by night-time views of Jupiter and the crescent moon, admission is free.

Later this October, get spooky with the Center’s Creatures Feature. Dress up and bring your family to enjoy spooky decorations, costumes, face-painting, and treats at the Nature Center Saturday on October 29, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. All kids wearing a nature-themed costume will receive a free craft. Admission is free.

There are also several monthly events to enjoy at the nature center.

Learn about the local ecosystem and discover nature on a free Discovery Hike, held on the first Saturday of the month. On the Discovery Hike, a guide will point out the fascinating features of the landscape, including rock formations, Native American history and local plants and wildlife. Upcoming hikes will start at 9:30 a.m. on October 1. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Take your young children on an adventure with Adventures in Nature, featuring nature walks, hands on crafts and live animal displays to help introduce young children to nature. The activity “provides an opportunity for young children to explore and to create,” said Rick Dean Community Services Coordinator for the Nature Center. Adventures in Nature is for families with early elementary and young children and will start at noon on October 8. There is a $3 fee per child.

Spend an afternoon creating earth friendly crafts at a free EarthCraft Afternoon, held on the last Sunday of the month. At EarthCraft Afternoons families can make Earth-friendly crafts from recyclable or natural items as part of the center’s earth friendly activities. The upcoming EarthCraft Afternoons will start at noon on October 30.

At the Nature Center, kids can become Nature Rangers on the third Saturday of the month. Guided by a naturalist, families and children ages seven and up can use hands on science tools to perform exciting outdoor investigations. The Upcoming Nature Rangers event will be at noon on October 15.
