Ontario, CA – The Ovitt Family Community Library celebrated the grand opening of the much-anticipated Lightspeed Makerspace. Yesterday, more than 300 community members, joined by Councilmember Debra Dorst-Porada, Library Board of Trustees, and representatives from Ontario-Montclair School District, joined in on the celebration.
“I was very excited to see so many people come out for the opening of the Lightspeed Makerspace,” said Councilmember Debra Dorst-Porada. “With the addition of Lightspeed, our library continues to be a leader in technology available to our community.”
Lightspeed is a space where individuals can get together to use computers to create 3D objects, digital art and use virtual reality to unleash their science, technology, engineering, arts and math skills (STEAM). During last night’s event, on display was a 3D printer and laser cutter creating a blue T-Rex. Families were able to experience building three dimensional objects and experience cutting-edge computer technology at their fingertips.
The Library created this Lightspeed Makerspace based on community feedback in response to STEAM programs. With the addition of Lightspeed, the Library is doing its part to help revitalize downtown by using OntarioNet Fiber to develop innovative thinkers in our community.
Anyone with an Ontario City Library card is welcome to use the equipment in the Lightspeed Makerspace. Library cards are available at no charge to anyone with a valid ID. Lightspeed is made possible with funding from the City of Ontario, the California State Library and donations from Friends of Ontario City Library.
