Local High School Students Recognized for Essays on Diversity

City of Riverside Human Relations Commission Awards Diversity Scholarship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Riverside Human Relations Commission is pleased to announce the winners of the Commission’s diversity essay contest.

The Commission reviewed 58 essays from high school students who wrote about their experiences with diversity in the City of Riverside. The Commission scored the essays with an assist from Mayor Rusty Bailey, a former teacher who was able to lend his “red pen skills” to the effort.

Applicants were judged on academic achievement, ability and writing skills. The prizes include three college scholarships of $1,000, $750 and $500 for first, second and third place, respectively

The 2013 Diversity Essay Scholarship winners are:

First place — Roberto Gutierrez, John W. North High School

Second place — Hoan Pham, La Sierra High School

Third Place — Anum Arshad, John W. North High School

The Human Relations Commission (HRC) is charged with fostering mutual understanding and respect between people; encouraging education and outreach; and developing and promoting programs which work to eliminate prejudice and discrimination.
