March Scout badge workshops at County Museum

March Scout badge workshops at County Museum

Tiger Cubs, Bear Cubs and Boy Scouts can earn badges in March by attending fun, hands-on Scout programs at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. Registration for badge workshops is now open.

Tiger Cubs can earn their Past Life and Animals badge on March 10, 2012 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. This package program includes practicing the core value of respect as they explore the past, learn to ask questions, and witness their elders’ experiences. In the animals section of the day, Tigers learn about animal groups, where they live, and what foods they eat. Cubs will also investigate proper pet care procedures in the museum’s live animal Exploration Station. Cost for this 2-hour workshop is $13.00 per Tiger, $10.00 for each accompanying adult, and $10.00 for participating siblings ages 5 and over. The cost includes museum admission for the day, as well as all supplies and materials. Deadline for registration is March 1, but parents may call Nancy Kirkwood at 909-307-2669, ext. 271, to check on space availability after that date. The registration form is available on-line athttp://www.sbcounty.gov/museum/discover/divisions/education/pdf/Webelo-and-Cub-Scout-Registration-form.pdf.

Boy Scouts can spend the evening earning their Astronomy Merit Badge on March 10, 2012, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Our certified Merit Badge Counselor will take you on an adventure through our solar system, including a visit to StarLab, our inflatable planetarium, as well as hands-on activities and individual guidance. The San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers have invited all scouts to view stars with them in the museum’s parking lot from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., weather permitting. Parents may drop their Boy Scouts off for this 3-hour workshop or may attend with them, but this program is not appropriate for siblings. Cost is $22.00 per Scout, and the registration form is on-line athttp://www.sbcounty.gov/museum/discover/divisions/education/pdf/Scout-Registration-form.pdf. The deadline to register is March 1, but Scouts may call Nancy Kirkwood at 909-307-2669, ext. 271, after the deadline to see if there is still space available in this workshop.

Bear Cubs can earn both their Space Badge and Astronomy Academic Belt Loop and Pin on March 24, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Bears will learn how to use binoculars and star maps and enjoy discovering the mysteries of our solar system through hands-on activities. In the StarLab inflatable planetarium, they will find common Greek constellations and compare them to those of other cultures. Bear Cubs cost $13.00 for this 2-hour workshop, adults are $10.00 each, and participating siblings ages 5 and over are $10.00 each. This cost includes museum admission for the day, as well as all supplies and materials. Deadline for registration is March 14, but parents may call Nancy Kirkwood at 909-307-2669, ext. 271, to check on space availability after the deadline. The registration form is available on-line athttp://www.sbcounty.gov/museum/discover/divisions/education/pdf/Webelo-and-Cub-Scout-Registration-form.pdf.

“The County Museum is a great place for boys to learn about these topics because we have the ‘real stuff’ available to us,” said Nancy Kirkwood, museum educator and Merit Badge Counselor. “We have real scientists here who help us with the latest information in their areas, plus we are surrounded by real specimens and real artifacts.”

Additional workshops are scheduled this spring at the museum. For Boy Scouts, Indian Lore is scheduled for April 14 and May 5 is an all-day Bird Study workshop and field trip. Bear Cubs have Native American Life on May 12, while Native American Lore on May 12 is for Wolf Cubs.

For more information and registration forms, visit the museum’s website at www.sbcountymuseum.org and click on Scout Programs. Registration forms will be accepted at the museum until the workshops are full.
