McKeon Statement on Latest Wikileaks Document Release

Washington, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the latest release of sensitive U.S. government documents by Wikileaks:

“This release of sensitive Department of State documents is the latest attempt to undermine American power and influence by sowing seeds of mistrust amongst the United States and its allies, but it will not work.

“Our nation deals with grave national security concerns every day. A critical tool for dealing with those challenges is the ability of our diplomats and military officials to interact with their counterparts from other nations without fear of those conversations being compromised. It also means that U.S. government officials must have the ability to offer their honest opinions and assessments without endangering their lives or relationships.

“The U.S. government has a suspect in custody, but the Administration must work to determine if others are responsible for leaking any of these documents as well, and, if so, hold them accountable for their actions. In addition, the Administration must identify how someone was able to leak such a large amount of classified information and build safeguards to ensure this does not happen again.”
