Moreno Valley, CA – Nine finalists representing their respective senior classes from each of the four comprehensive high schools in the Moreno Valley Unified School District were awarded scholarships or a car Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in Moreno Valley. Finalists gathered at the Moreno Valley Auto Mall at Moss. Bros.
Toyota in front of friends, family, and representatives from the Moreno Valley Unified School District and School Board including Dr. Martinrex Kedziora, Susan Smith, Jesus M. Holguin, and Cleveland Johnson.

Maria Bazan Urmeneta from Canyon Springs High School was the big prize winner taking home a 2016 Chevrolet Spark LT. Bazan Urmeneta is also Canyon Springs’ valedictorian and plans to attend the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall.
The $1,000 scholarship winners were Francisco Castellon (Vista del Lago High School), Jalen Long (Valley View High School), David Anyakora (Moreno Valley High School) and Alex Romero (Canyon Springs High School). The winners of the $500 scholarship were Andrew Aceves (Canyon Springs High School), Paulina Grijalva (Moreno Valley High School), McKenna Esquibel (Valley View High School), and Alegria Nieto (Vista del Lago High School).
“We congratulate these seniors for their hard work and creativity,” said MVUSD Board President Susan Smith, “We are so thankful to have a partner in the Moreno Valley Auto Mall that cares about our students and the community and wants to help our students continue their education after high school.”
The scholarship was open to all seniors at the four comprehensive high schools in the Moreno Valley Unified School District. To compete, students participated in a two week Instagram photo challenge. The scholarship recipients were selected based on creativity and fan engagement. Bazan Urmeneta was selected to win the vehicle in a random drawing of all finalists.
