California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Recognizes CTE Programs
Moreno Valley, CA – Eleven of Moreno Valley College’s Career & Technical Education disciplines were cited for excellence by the Workforce and Economic Development Division at the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Last year, MVC had just one program recognized.
“These awards affirm the great work our faculty and staff are doing to support students in gaining employment in their field of study and earning a living wage,” Melody Graveen, dean, CTE, said. “We look forward to continued progress in assisting students in meeting their education and career goals.”
Districtwide, the Riverside Community College District colleges offer more than 120 CTE programs.
“Career & Technical Education is a vital part of our College’s mission,” Robin Steinback, Ph.D., president, said. “In order to meet the regional industry needs, the College needs to continue to develop and maintain quality CTE programs. At the same time, it is important that students understand that the College offers programs where they can develop marketable technical skills that make them immediately employable.”
To earn a Bronze, Silver or Gold Star a program had to do one or more of the following:
- See an increase in earnings by 50 percent or more, based on a match to the state wage file (students last enrolled in 2015-16 academic year);
- Attainment of the regional living wage by 70 percent or more, based on a match to the state wage file (students last enrolled in 2015-16 academic year);
- Have 90 percent of students or more employed in a job similar to their field of study (students last enrolled in 2014-15).
Three programs received a Silver Star (meeting two metrics):
- Emergency Medical Services Paramedic: 139 percent increase in earnings and 100 percent of students attained the regional living wage
- Early Childhood Education: 64 percent increase in earnings and 100 percent of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study
- Basic Firefighter Academy: 76 percent of students attained the regional living wage and 100 percent of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study.
Eight programs were awarded a Bronze Star (attaining one metric). Seven of the Bronze award-wining programs attained an outcome of 90 percent or more in their metric.
- Dental Assistant: 100 percent of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study
- Legal and Community Interpretation: 100 percent of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study
- Computer Programming: 111 percent increase in earnings
- Software Applications: 93 percent increase in earnings
- Police Academy: 90 percent of students attained the regional living wage
- Fire Technology: 94 percent of students attained the regional living wage
- Physician Assistant (no longer offered): 100 percent of students are employed in a job similar to their field of study
- Real Estate: 54 percent increase in earnings
