Museum Field Trip: San Andreas Fault

San Bernardino County Museum Senior Curator Kathleen Springer and Curator of Geology J. Chris Sagebiel will lead a trip to the San Andreas Fault, from Redlands to Devil’s Punchbowl County Park, on Saturday, September 18. Reservations are required by September 15.

Springer and Sagebiel will take the group across the fault as it makes it way through the Cajon Pass with stops at Blue Cut and Lost Lake in Lone Pine Canyon. Then, in Wrightwood, they will view the evidence of faulting from a major quake in 1812 and observe the rupture from the last time the San Andreas thundered mightily in southern California, in 1857.  At Big Pines, Springer will take participants to the highest point on the San Andreas Fault before descending into the desert to catch up with the fault again where it is spectacularly displayed at Devil’s Punchbowl.

Participants will leave the museum at 7:30am and return at about 5pm. Wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for moderate to strenuous hikes. The cost of $70 per person ($60 for Museum Association members) includes transportation, morning coffee and lunch.

Space is limited, and pre-paid registration is required by September 15, 2010. Call LaWanda Avery-Brown at (909) 307-2669 ext. 225 or visitwww.sbcountymuseum.org for more information.
