Museum Trip to Los Angeles paleontology museums
Downtown Los Angeles is a hotbed for paleontology! Reservations are now open to join Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott on a San Bernardino County Museum Association trip to explore two Los Angeles museums on Saturday, April 21. The cost of $90/person or $85/senior or child ($80 and $75 respectively for Museum Association members) includes transportation, admission to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the George C. Page Museum, and a box lunch. Seating is limited; reserve by April 6 by calling the Museum Association at (909) 307-2669 ext. 250. The trip will depart from the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands at 8 a.m. and return about 6:30 p.m.
“Right now, museums in LA boast a plethora of fossil treasures dating back to the Ice Ages and even before,” said Scott. “We’ll see many of these important finds at the new Age of Mammals Hall at the Natural History Museum. Most of these discoveries have never been seen on display; it’ll be a whole new adventure even for people who have visited the LA museums all their lives.”
Across town, the world famous Rancho La Brea “tar pits” have produced over three million beautifully-preserved fossils representing more than six hundred species of animals and plants. “The ‘tar pits’ have been producing fossils for over a century, yet brand new discoveries are still being made here every day,” said Scott. “La Brea is literally standing at the threshold of a new ‘Golden Age’ of discovery.”
Scott is a Museum Associate of the Page Museum, and has worked and studied there for over three decades; he therefore brings a unique and unparalleled insider’s perspective to the site and its fossils.
