Museum Trips to San Andreas Fault

Reservations are now being accepted for two one-day trips to explore the San Andreas Fault led by San Bernardino County Museum Senior Curator Kathleen Springer and Curator of Paleontology Eric Scott. On Saturday, September 21, a day trip will explore the ShakeOut rupture from Redlands to Los Angeles County. On Saturday, October 12, a day trip heads from Redlands to the Salton Sea to look at the epicenter of the ShakeOut scenario. Registration is open for one or both excursions, which are organized by the San Bernardino County Museum Association. The trips both precede the Great California ShakeOut, the world’s largest earthquake drill, scheduled at the County Museum on October 17 at 10:17 a.m.

The San Andreas fault: The ShakeOut Rupture into Los Angeles County

Follow the San Andreas fault from Redlands through Cajon Pass and beyond. The fault divides the San Gabriel Mountains from the San Bernardino Mountains and is clearly visible through Cajon Pass, extending into the Antelope Valley before it continues up through California to north of San Francisco. Participants on this trip will literally be able to straddle the fault, with one foot on the Pacific Plate and the other on the North American continental plate. Two short day hikes include some challenging rock scrambling and elevation gain. The excursion leaves the museum in Redlands at 8:00 a.m. and returns about 5 p.m. Transportation, lunch, water, and light snacks are included in the cost of $60/person for Museum Association members or $70 for non-members. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Paid reservations must be received by September 13. Space is limited.
