Riverside, CA – Nine Riverside City College students qualified for the 51st Annual State SkillsUSA Competition next month.
SkillsUSA is the largest demonstration career annual competition in the nation. Over 300,000 high school and college-level students participate in the regional, state and national competitions each year.
The regional competition, which was held at Riverside City College, saw four students win their respective categories. Phuong Vu won in Graphics Imaging Sublimation; Wade Abbas captured gold in Advertising Design; Daniel Long took the top price in Graphic Communications; and Daniel Gamboa on the Photography division. Other individuals advancing to the state competition are: Eva Afaghani and Flora Kim in Advertising Design; Sotheara Ly and Dustin Balugay in Graphic Communications; and Roxanne King, Ryan Adams, Horacio Garcia and Ana Mendoza in Photography competition.
Over 100 students from area high schools and colleges competed at RCC for the chance to move onto the state competition. In addition to competing in a variety of technical fields, students also get to network and practice job application skills by completing a resume and participating in job interviews with industry representatives.
The 2018 SkillsUSA Annual State Leadership and Skill Conference will be held April 19-22 at the Ontario Convention Center. The national competition is scheduled for Louisville, KY in late June.
“The CTE faculty are proud to have a number of students advance to the state competition,” Patrick Scullin, associate professor, Applied Digital Media, said. “Each year our students put in a lot of time and effort in preparation for the SkillsUSA competition, we are pleased to once again send a strong contingent of students to the state competition.”
