Be part of the fun! In the 1920s, F. Scott Fitzgeralds fictional Jay Gatsby gave big parties nearly every week. The San Bernardino County Museum invites guests to party like the 20s under the stars on Saturday evening, July 9, from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Gatsbys at the Grove. Because space is limited, advance reservations are required. The cost is $10 per person.
The party starts at 6:30 p.m. with dancing to the music of Nannette and her Hotsy Totsy Boys performing a 1920s revue. Lupita Limón and her Limónades dancers will set the mood with two special showcase dances. Supper, vintage soda and candy, margaritas, and Hangar 24 suds will be available for purchase. Guests can also enjoy a temporary exhibit of 1920s treasures from the museums history division collections, including a recent donation of vintage clothing from that era.
Guests are invited to come to the party dressed in 1920s glad rags, and sashay across the dance floor during the Fashion Promenade. Our grand finale will include an old-fashioned balloon drop and bunny hop. Enchanted Attic Costume Rental has supplied outfits for staff and offers a generous discount to Gatsby guests who mention the museums name when renting a costume.
Well be dancing the night away in the museum courtyard, said Curator of History Michele Nielsen. Guests will enjoy seeing all the renovations weve made since our first Gatsby event in 2009, and since our 1930s40s dance party last year. These historically themed dance parties arent fund raisers, but theyve inspired contributions that have allowed us to significantly improve interpretation of our outdoor historic exhibits and, of course, our train renovation.
Nielsen explained how the decade of the 1920s is of particular interest to the history of inland Southern California. Flappers, bathtub gin, and dancing the Charleston are certainly an important aspect of the eras legacy. But issues like prohibition, womens suffrage, and post World War I social and economic changes are at the root of seemingly frivolous issues like bobbed hair and short skirts.
