The Judy Davis Memorial Fund was established to honor the 1994 CSUSB marketing graduate, who died last year from pneumonia, said CSUSB Marketing Chair, Victoria Seitz.   The scholarship is a way to promote individuals commitment to their communities like Judy did throughout her short life, noted Seitz.

“Judy’s devotion to help others propelled the establishment of the fund,” says her mother Doreen Davis.

After graduation, Judy Davis worked for GTE, now Verizon, in Yellow Pages advertising, but decided to work helping others, Seitz said. Davis joined Volunteers in Parole, a unique mentoring organization that was established to mentor men and women on parole by enlisting attorneys to be guides, advisers, friends and role models. Davis helped launch the program in Riverside, serving as program director, Seitz said.

“Judy had a special knack for attracting talented volunteers, judges and lawyers to mentor her clients as she helped them achieve the goal of becoming professionals in the community,” Seitz said.

Davis’s efforts helped hundreds of parolees build their lives again and become productive citizens in the community.  Even after the program was dissolved due to budget cuts, Davis continued to help parolees integrate into society through her involvement in Red Ribbon Week at local high schools, said Doreen Davis.

For her efforts, Davis received recognition for the organization’s outstanding success in its first year from the Riverside County Department of Corrections. She was also recognized by Assemblyman Bill Emmerson as a District 63 Woman of Distinction.
