Claremont, CA – Pomona College has been named one of the top producers of U.S. Fulbright students and scholars for 2017-2018 among bachelor’s institutions, as reported this week in The Chronicle of Higher Education. At. No. 7 on the list, Pomona and Pitzer College (No. 6), are the only California institutions in the Top 10.
The Fulbright program seeks to promote international understanding by offering awards for one year of research very broadly defined, university study, or English language teaching abroad. For 2017-2018, a total of 14 Pomona students and alumni were awarded Fulbrights with three students declining. The Fulbright competition is administered at Pomona College through the Career Development Office.
Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 380,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. Over 1,900 U.S. students, artists and young professionals in more than 100 different fields of study are offered Fulbright Program grants to study, teach English, and conduct research abroad each year.
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is a program of the U.S. Department of State, funded by an annual appropriation from Congress to the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and supported in its implementation by the Institute of International Education.
Pomona and Pitzer College are two of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions that make up the unique consortium of The Claremont Colleges. Pomona students may supplement the College’s already comprehensive curriculum by taking classes at any of the undergraduate Claremont Colleges. The more than 2,000 courses available include intercollegiate majors and a wide range of language offerings.
