Latino Literacy Now also hosts a variety of literacy initiatives including health literacy and environmental literacy.

Latino Literacy Now’s initial community outreach effort, the Latino Book & Family Festival, was first held in 1997 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The festival was co-founded by actor Edward James Olmos, who made a five-year commitment to help build the Festival into one of the best and most widely appreciated community events anywhere. Due to the ongoing success of the Festival, and because so many cities are showing an active interest in holding these festivals, a few years ago he went on to make a lifetime commitment to Latino Literacy Now, the Latino Book & Family Festival, the International Latino Book Awards and all other literacy programs.
