Riverside, CA – The Riverside Community College District received notification this week that Moreno Valley, Norco and Riverside City colleges were each awarded a Basic Skills and Student Outcome Transformation grant. The California Community Colleges Board of Governors approved $60 million in grant funding statewide, of which RCCD will receive close to $4.4 million.
MVC, NC and RCC will each receive nearly $1.5 million for one year to implement innovative, high impact strategies to increase success in college and transfer level English and mathematics. A total of 43 community colleges across California were awarded grants.
The Basic Skills and Student Outcomes Transformation Program provides Proposition 98 funds to implement or expand evidence-based innovations and redesign in the areas of assessment, student services and instruction in order to improve progression from remedial education to college level instruction.
“Competing successfully to win these three Basic Skills grants is a testament to our colleges’ commitment to student success,” said Michael L. Burke, chancellor. “The funds will allow us to increase critically needed support services for our students.”
The colleges will apply the grants to improve student access and success through intervention programs including implementing a Multiple Measures Assessment and Placement (MMAP) system, a California Acceleration Program (CAP) which reduces remedial English and mathematics sequences by developing accelerated courses, and a co-requisite remediation model which delivers academic support while students are learning college-level content and approaches that contextualize the teaching of basic skills within select career technical education (CTE) paths.
In addition, the transformation program funds will be used to expand existing student support services, including Supplemental Instruction (SI) and one-on-one and group tutoring, as well as in class tutoring, to foster student retention and success.
