Record Crowd Expected This Weekend for Riverside Tamale Festival

RIVERSIDE, CA – Spanish Town Heritage Foundation presents the 4th Annual Riverside Tamale Festival on Saturday, April 16, 2016 in Riverside’s White Park, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 10:45 a.m. on the community stage. Highlights of the festival include food and gift vendors, music, dance, entertainment, children’s activities and an historical exhibit on the Trujillo Adobe and La Placita de Los Trujillos. Admission is a $5 donation for an individual or for a family of four. Children under 12 are free. Attendees will enjoy the food, music, dancing, art and celebrate our communal culture.  We are now familia!

The Riverside Tamale Festival is part of a journey toward a restored and rehabilitated Trujillo Adobe—a structure of historical significance to all of Inland Southern California—with a vision that includes not only the restoration of the adobe, but ultimately the re-establishment of La Placita, “Spanish Town,” as an old town Riverside.

Festival highlights this year include; a street fair called “La Placita” including local artists and performers at the community stage and a host of non-profit organizations. In addition, various contests will take place: the 2016 Best Tamale, Tamale Eating Contest, and Chancla toss contest, as well as Zona de Ninos in the Kids Zone with story times and piñata experience. White Park proper will feature the Family Connections Booth, the Old Spanish Trail and Genealogy of Hispanic America booths, main stage entertainment and a micro/macro beer garden. Two stages of entertainment with local talents such as; saxophonist Jay Boykin, actress and singer T Lopez, vocalist Jimmy Imperial, Felipe Orozoco and Mariachi  Tierra Azteca, Resplandor de Mexico Folklorico Dance Company, Ballet Folkorico Sones de Mi Tierra, Danza Azteca Gualdalupana, and DW3.

“We are excited about the festival this year and since it’s inception have seen enormous growth. People travel from far and wide to participate. We expect the momentum to continue to build each year,” said organizer Nancy Melendez.
