On Tuesday, August 9 at 4 p.m. TeenRead will discuss “Hoot” by Carl Hiaasen. Can kids really stop a construction site from destroying the homes of a population of cute, big-eyed burrowing owls? Based upon the book, the discussion will center around how to take action to protect things that are important to you. “The mantra of TeenRead is ‘Read, chat, and decide for yourself!’ said Jolene Redvale, curator of education, who leads the discussion. “We meet the second Tuesday of each month for lively discussions, snacks, and to meet new friends.”
The Reading Discoveries group features contemporary and classic topics in natural and cultural history. It meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The book for the August 10 discussion is, “No Place for a Puritan,” edited by Ruth Nolan. The volume brings together works by 80 writers and poets who pay homage to the California desert, a land that has been both feared and romanticized throughout the ages. Editor Nolan will be on hand to chat about the process of selecting the works present in the anthology and to answer questions from participants.
“In addition, we will welcome Ruth Nolan herself on Thursday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. for a special lecture,” said Redvale. “She will give a talk focused on issues of desert conservation from her perspective as a writer, as a desert activist, and as a former wildland firefighter for the BLM California Desert District.” Nolan has a B.A. in English from California State University, San Bernardino, and M.A. in English/Creative Writing fromNorthern Arizona University. She is Associate Professor of English at College of the Desert and lives in Palm Desert. This lecture will be free to the public.
