FeRita Perna Carter, Ph.D., has been appointed as vice president of Student Services at Riverside City College, effective July 11. As vice president, she’ll oversee many of the student resource divisions as well as athletics.
Carter, who was born in Montgomery, AL, earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a certificate in Health Systems from Georgia Institute of Technology. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Public Administration from Auburn University at Montgomery and a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration from Mississippi State University.
Prior to coming to RCC, Carter, 47, served as a Political Science faculty member and dean for the School of Business and Technology at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, NC. In addition, she has served as vice president for Student Affairs at Voorhees College and also served in the capacities of vice president for Institutional Advancement, director for Title III programs, and coordinated the pre-award activities in the Sponsored Programs office. Additional senior-level administrative work experiences include: vice president, Student Affairs at Mississippi Valley State University, and special assistant to the president/director of Title III Programs at Mississippi Valley State University.
“I look forward to working under Dr. (Wolde-Ab) Isaac’s dynamic leadership and being a part of the leadership team,” Carter said. “Riverside City College has so very much to offer that when I was looking at the website, I wanted to enroll as a student instead of applying for a job.
“We have an awesome group of students at RCC and I look forward to learning from them and being fully engaged and immersed in the student services, events and activities offered throughout the year.”
In announcing his selection, Isaac said Carter holds a wealth of experience in fundraising and sponsored programs.
“She has conducted workshops on student leadership and development, proposal writing, budgeting, and grantsmanship,” he said. “She has been a consultant at various HBCUs as well as with the U.S. Department of Education.”
Carter is a charter member of the National Sponsored Programs Administrators Alliance, and a member of the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals, National Association for Campus Activities, National Association of Title III Administrators, and the American Society of Public Administrators as well as Christian Faith Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
