For the second consecutive year, Riverside City College’s Model UN team was named Outstanding Delegation at the 2018 National Model United Nations Conference
MODEL UN TEAM WINS OUTSTANDING DELEGATION AT NEW YORK CONFERENCE
Rivserside, CA – Riverside City College’s Model UN team was named Outstanding Delegation and two students were honored as Outstanding Delegate at United Nations’ New York Conference, April 9-13.
Over 5,000 college/university students, more than half from outside the United States, convened on New York City to discuss current global issues. Delegates are tasked to solve three pressing issues relevant to UN committees. The purpose of the conference is to advance the understanding of the UN and of contemporary international issues that have positively impacted the lives of numerous delegates. This year, RCC was tasked with representing Honduras.
In addition to winning the best delegation and having two students selected as top delegates, RCC had four students four students win the Outstanding Position/Research Paper Award. With Jessica Tomlin and Trey LaRocca being named Outstanding Delegates, RCC has now had a student selected as a top delegate in three consecutive UN events. Previously, Ariya Haghighat and Rachel Lennox (Japan event) and Argie Hill (Rome) earned the Outstanding Delegate Award.
The four students winning the Outstanding Position/Research Paper Award were Mathew Craig, Amy Maciel, Hector Flores and Haghighat, son of Dariush Haghighat, a professor of political science at RCC and a UN advisor.
“I could not be more proud of this group of young and extremely diverse students who are mostly from under representative communities,” Haghighat said.
Other team members included Gamaliel Perez, Brendan Brown, Mohammed Hassan, Jason Fratus, Lindsey Anderson, Jesus Lopez, Valery Moya Laurito, and Jasmine Brown.
