Riverside City College to Test Emergency Notification System as Part of Great California Shakeout Drill on October 20
Riverside City College will deploy its mass notification system October 20 at 10:20 am as part of Shakeout International Day of Action. This annual event is intended to prepare local entities and individuals should there be a major earthquake or other emergency scenario.
The College’s emergency notification system will output a high audio announcement, proving students, faculty and staff with instructions as if it were an actual emergency. The announcement will play continuously for the duration of the exercise. Communities on the outskirts of the campus may hear the audio announcement.
Students, faculty and staff will practice the drop, cover and hold on position during the drill, which is expected to take 20 minutes. Endorsed by emergency officials and first responders, the safe response to an earthquake is to drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy item, protecting your head and neck, and hold on.
As part of the training, the campus will be evacuated. An estimated 13,000 students are expected to be on campus at the time of the drill. With the exception of the College parking structure, located off Magnolia Ave, motor vehicle traffic will be restricted between 10:15 to 10:50 am.
