Speakers representing diverse backgrounds will be sharing their successes. The Women’s Leadership Committee’s mission is to deliver an UPLIFT: Unify, Prosper, Learn, Inspire, Fulfill and Thrive conference to those in the community who wish to attend this interactive and inspirational event.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Michelle Skoorka, Director of Laboratory Research and Internships and Division Head for Prototyping & Development at Naval Undersea Warfare Center, has broken through barriers to live her dream of working at NASA. Her story demonstrates that Plans A or B aren’t always the direct routes to our goals. She’s a living example of why we shouldn’t give up on our dreams.

You will experience the passion she has about what she does. While she’s talking to students at Department of Defense STEM conventions about internship opportunities, mentoring young women about their careers, or designing launch systems for submarines, she goes at it all-in. But getting to where she is involved reformulating her plan numerous times.

“Growing up I wanted to be Captain Kirk. Then I found out there were no starships or starship captains. Everything was a disaster! I then went to plan B. I knew I could be an astronaut and go into space. I just figured that was the closest thing to a starship captain. I even used to sign my name ‘Michelle Skoorka FNASAA.’ Which stood for ‘Future NASA Astronaut.’ That was all great until I realized I had a terrible motion sickness problem. I couldn’t be an astronaut. So then came plan B.5. I’m going to work for or with NASA.” – Dr. Michelle Skoorka

Our other speakers are Former Astronaut Dr. Leslie Wickman, Entrepreneur C.C. Vest, and Assistant City Manager Lea Deesing. These women have dominated in their fields and broken through ceilings to achieve the great successes they have.

The Chamber is proud to work with our partners this year to provide this Riverside County’s Leadership Conference: The County of Riverside and various chambers of commerce.
