RUHS Community Health Center Opens in Moreno Valley as Efforts Continue to Expand Access to Quality Services

Moreno Valley, Ca. — A new federally qualified community health center in Moreno Valley will expand access to primary and specialty care in the region, while serving as a portal to wellness in Riverside County’s second largest city, leaders from Riverside University Health System said this week.

The state-of-the-art 24,000 sq.-ft. center formally opened Monday in a renovated Altura Bank building on the northeast corner of Cactus Ave. and Graham St. The patient-focused medical home is Riverside University Health System’s eleventh federally qualified Community Health Center countywide. The health centers provide services on a sliding scale and are governed by a board of patients and stakeholders.

“I love it,” Juanita Moreland, an accounts clerk said of the Moreno Valley center. Moreland said patients and employees appreciate the beautiful, healing environment and the new services that will soon be coming online such as pharmacy and radiology.

Moreland said many patients are within walking distance and can connect to a variety of specialized services such as a clinic for teens. The Teen Clinic serves youth and young adults between the ages of 16 and 21. They can walk in on Mondays between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to be seen by a provider, Moreland said. The center also is home to interdisciplinary teams including behavioral health clinicians who work directly with medical providers to  provide seamless services in one location.

Dr. Geoffrey Leung, medical director for RUHS Community Health Centers, said he expects the contemporary design and innovative practices at the Moreno Valley Center will attract top Family Medicine medical residents from across the country.

Riverside University Health System trains upward of 1,000 medical residents and medical students annually through its own residency programs and in partnership with several universities.  RUHS sponsors one of California’s first Family Medicine programs to be accredited by the American College of Graduate Medical Education in the early 1970s.

“This is a really special day for our patients and our providers,” Leung said at the grand opening ceremony.
