Board of Supervisors declares shelter crisis, seeks funding from State for homelessness
San Bernardino, CA – On Tuesday, October 16, my fellow colleagues on the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution declaring the existence of a shelter crisis in the unincorporated areas of the County.
The approval of this resolution provides the necessary eligibility needed for San Bernardino County to apply for over $9 million in HEAP funds through the State of California. Of this amount, the State has mandated that 5% of the funding must address youth homelessness.
The California legislature saw the need to provide assistance with the current homeless crisis and subsequently approved $500 million in one-time Homeless Emergency Aid to fund innovative, system-wide and multi-jurisdictional approaches to address homelessness.
“Approving this item on the agenda was crucial for our County to continue to tackle homelessness,” Supervisor Ramos stated. “I applaud the Board for approving the resolution declaring a “Shelter Crisis” and encourage other cities to do the same in order to be eligible for a portion of this vital funding source.”
Applications for projects are due to the San Bernardino County Community Development and Housing Agency no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2018.
