The San Bernardino Symphony announces 2012-13 Season

Plans for the San Bernardino Symphony’s 2012-13 season, Musical Destinations, are well underway. Conducted under the baton of newly appointed artistic advisor Frank Fetta, the season promises a series of breathtaking musical journeys, and immense enjoyment for concert audiences.

The Symphony opens the series on September 22 with Russian Roulade, playing Glinka’s exuberant ‘Russian and Ludmilla Overture,’ Tchaikovsky’s ‘Variations on a Rococo Theme,’ featuring the return of acclaimed cello soloist Marek Szpakiewicz, and Rachmaninoff’s triumphant ‘Symphony No. 2.’

The orchestra’s November 10 concert will celebrate all things French with Faure’s spectacular ‘Pelleas & Melisande,’ Debussy’s poetic ‘Petite Suite,’ Bizet’s dazzling ‘Symphony in C,’ and Ravel’s ‘Piano Concerto in G Major’ featuring pianist Esther Keel.
The New Year will herald in Treasures of the Americas, the Symphony’s annual afternoon family concert on Jan. 13, 2013. The concert features selections form Copland’s ever popular ‘Rodeo,’ Kubic’s whimsical ‘Gerald McBoing Boing’, a musical adventure based on the popular Dr. Seuss story, Revueltas’ ‘Homage to Garcia Lorca,’ and closes with Copland’s beautiful ‘Appalachian Spring’ accompanied by folk dancers.

On March 9, the SBSO celebrates the shared 200th birthday of Verdi and Wagner with great orchestral and operatic works including selections from ‘Die Meistersinger,’ ‘The Flying Dutchman,’ ‘La Forza del Destino,’ and the ‘Ballet Music of Aida,’ among others. Acclaimed soprano Erin Wood and baritone Ralph Cato will share their dynamic virtuosity, performing some of music’s most popular opera arias alongside the orchestra.

As a grand conclusion to the season, the San Bernardino Symphony presents Classics Revisited on May 18, 2013. Audiences will delight to Mozart’s ‘Overture to the Magic Flute,’ enjoy the deeply moving Brahms’ ‘Violin Concerto,’ and experience Beethoven’s magnificent ‘Symphony No. 5.’

Season tickets are currently on sale for the Symphony’s 2012-13 season and can be purchased online at www.sanbernardinosymphony.org or by calling (909) 381-5388.

According to executive director Valerie Peister, “We are thrilled to have Maestro Fetta conducting the 2012-13 SBSO concert series. He brings a unique charisma and depth of interpretation to his conducting, and always has an amazing rapport with concert audiences. We greatly anticipate the season’s journey through many musical realms.”

Incoming Maestro Fetta also serves as the music director and conductor for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, the Torrance Symphony and the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony. And for many years he has served as the music director for the prestigious Loren Zachary International Vocal Competition.

According to Fetta, “The idea of musical destinations is a wonderful thematic device allowing for great creativity in what we will be offering this season. I am very excited about not only working with the incredible members of the Symphony, but also with the outstanding guests we have planned.”

Five-concert season ticket packages are currently available starting at $70, and the Symphony is offering a 10% discounts for subscriptions purchased by May 31. All programs will be held at the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts, 562 W. 4th Street, San Bernardino. All evening concerts will start at 7:30 p.m.
