San Bernardino’s Fire Chief Mike Conrad Mentors the Arrowhead United Way Young Leadership Council

San Bernardino, CA, —The Arrowhead United Way Young Leadership Council conducted their quarterly lunch with a community leader March 21, 2012 with much success. The veteran leader, San Bernardino Fire Chief Mike Conrad, spoke on various aspects of leadership that have proved successful throughout his career as well as hardships leaders have to overcome. Conrad’s years of service began in 1974 and he continues to educate and teach the future leaders of tomorrow. The Young Leadership Council co-chair, Karla Morales, asked the chief to describe his leadership style which he described his style as a collaborative one. Conrad, shared that his employment history has varied from entry level occupations to his current role and encouraged the young leaders to never be afraid to take on a challenge. Steering committee member for YLC, Tommy Mayers, took away the following from the lunch— “the best way to move up in any job is your willingness to volunteer yourself to learn something new in order to advance to the next level.” Conrad emphasized that maintaining a good attitude is a key factor in setting the tone in an organization and that commitment to careers, education, and current employers is very important.

Participants also received a brief tour of the San Bernardino Fire training station from Archie Hickerson, the Executive Assistant to the Fire Chief.
