Seven RUSD Students to Compete in 2011 National Competitions Held in Los Angeles, California

~ Call for Support of NAACP Riverside Branch Academic Cultural Technological Scientific 2011 Olympics ~

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. — June 24, 2011 — Each year, the National Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) holds a national conference where awards are given out in various categories. The 102nd NAACP Annual National Convention (www.naacp.org) will take place July 23-28, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.

Academic, Cultural, Technological, Scientific Olympics of the Mind (ACT-SO) is an enrichment program designed to recruit, stimulate and encourage high academics and cultural achievement among high school students of Afro-American decent. Hundreds of students from across the United States compete in 26 different categories for national scholarships and awards.

During our brief history, Riverside NAACP ACT-SO program has had a profound impact on the lives of more than 500 young people. Our students have competed with the best and have on more than one occasion brought home gold, silver and bronze medals as a testament to the hard work they put into the competition.

This year we have seven (7) young people competing in the National competition in July and we are once again confident that we have some winners amongst us!

The Riverside ACT-SO program covers all expenses for each student that participates in the program.

NAACP-Riverside Branch is seeking donations to offset the cost of sending these young people to the competition. The cost is $7,500, which covers the students lodging, transportation and a small daily stipend for food. The students have already begun their fund-raising activities but need additional support to reach their goal.

If you would like to make a donation or have any questions, please contact ACT-SO Chairperson Lillian Harper at 951-683-6225 or via email at rivnaacp@gmail.com.

Please help inspire these talented youth by contributing to this cause. Each day we hear and read negative news stories involving our youth. Today, help us to make a difference and encourage the positive endeavors of these young scholars. They are truly worthy of your contribution.
